Description
As champions of student
health, school nurses are in a unique position to educate parents and families
about T1D and the benefits of early detection through screening. While T1D is a
lifelong autoimmune disease that cannot be prevented, early detection, and
monitoring can help individuals to reduce the risk of life-threatening
complications and hospitalization as well as better plan for and manage a
potential diagnosis.
NASN’s Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Toolkit: Educating Families About Early Detection Screening for Type 1 Diabetes provides evidence-based recommendations to assist the school nurse and other school leaders in raising awareness and educating families about T1D and T1D screening options to facilitate conversations with their family’s healthcare provider. Multiple resources are included in the toolkit to facilitate these conversations.
